Of all the women on the show, Jane Curtin was least willing to laugh off Belushi’s chauvinism, his tantrums, and his lack of professionalism. Jane and John became what one habitué of the 17th floor called “arch enemies.” Jane was a former debutante from Boston whose husband, Patrick Lynch, was a preppy from the pullover sweater tied around his neck to his penny loafers. Jane was straight, intelligent, and cool, if not cold—qualities that brought out the worst in John. Jane’s most common response when John misbehaved was a sneer—she was an artist of the sarcastic putdown, and sneering was something she did extremely well—but sometimes he’d make a sexist remark to her and they’d end up in a shouting match in the hall.
